Once your data is inside a table, a new contextual tab will appear. You can create an Excel table by selecting a cell inside your data ➜ going to the Insert tab ➜ Table. Your data will need to be inside a proper Excel table. Previous versions of Excel will not have slicers or timelines.

Timelines are only available for use with date fields in PivotTables. The dates appear in a horizontal line going from oldest to newest as you go from left to right on the timeline. They allow you to easily filter on ranges of dates by days, months, quarters or years.

The article shows the user interface of the free version of Tabular Editor the steps required are identical in the commercial version of Tabular Editor. However, Tabular Editor is your key to unlocking this feature. You cannot apply the same behavior to a column of a table you created or imported by using Power BI.

This option is visible when the column has particular metadata applied to it by Power BI so that you also see a special icon in the Fields pane. This option is not available when you use other columns of your model in a slicer. When creating a New Parameter in Power BI, you get a Slicer with a Single Value option.
